As we celebrate the July 4th holiday with grilling, ice cream, and fireworks, we also pause to appreciate the freedom we enjoy and those who served to protect it.

The American flag on the Buyers Meeting Point homepage is dedicated in memory of John Winfield Allen, Jr. who passed away just over a year ago. He lived an amazing life, serving in the Army in France during World War II and distinguishing himself by earning two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star.

His service was not limited to the military, and he was active in a number of organizations throughout his life including the Boy Scouts of America, the American Red Cross, the United Way and the American Cancer Society. When not working to better his community, he enjoyed reading, camping, golfing, dancing, fishing, traveling, boating, and woodworking.

He is an example of someone who lived every day he was given with joy, and who brightened the lives of those who now miss him so dearly.
